Contracting Services

Scalable Medium-Term Actuarial Services

Contract (day rate) work

Filling in staff gaps, or helping out with specific projects

What is it?

I offer my services to companies on a day-rate basis. Typically this is done through the standard recruitment agents. Contracts deemed to be Outside IR35 would be invoiced via a limited company, while contracts deemed to be Inside IR35 are typically managed through an Umbrella company.

Why use contractors? Why use Richard?

Contracting gives companies a secure interim resource. While more expensive than full-time staff there are much lower overheads, and contractors are usually considerably cheaper than consultants. Development projects or interim cover of roles, where a contract is expected to last between 3 and 24 months, are ideally suited to use of these interim resources.

In addition to their standard basket of skills, contractors bring a wide range of fresh ideas to projects. While a good contractor knows when to follow established project directions, fresh ideas as well as deeper / wider experience can help with optimising delivery as well as identifying risks that might otherwise have been missed.

Richard comes with many years of diverse experience, gained through corporate, consulting and contracting work. Much of this experience has been gained in fast-changing environments, requiring not only use of formal actuarial training but also research into regulatory requirements, historical company practice and new techniques of dealing with challenges. See the LinkedIn profile (link at the bottom of the page) for further details.

OK, how much?

Contractor rates vary considerably. In the UK day-rates we've seen vary from £500 for a less experienced analyst, to £1,500 for senior actuaries covering a significant leadership role. Agency fees and VAT would be in addition to that.

Rates would also vary according to whether the contract is Inside IR35 or Outside IR35. Another factor would be specific contract expenses that are not reclaimable - for example, a fully remote contract would be less expensive than one that requires the contractor to travel extensively at their own expense.

Anything else?

If you are considering recruiting a contractor then your company will probably require you to route the recruitment process via one or more of the agencies that they use. If you would like an agency to include me in the search I would be more than happy to hear from them.

If you would like to discuss contracting or alternative similar solutions then please drop me a line.

As always, our contact details are below.
